Early intervention is crucial to stop permanent damage to tooth, gums and jaw bone. Stage 1 (gingivitis) is the only stage that is reversible and that is why it is important to scale the teeth and under the gumline in a timely manner to stop progression to stage 2. Both stage 2 and 3 cannot be reversed but can stop progression to stage 4 if done regularly and on time. Stage 4 means that teeth are most likely to need extractions. At this stage the pet is usually in considerable pain.
